Harry (Rob Estes) and Debbie (Lori Loughlin) also deal with Sean’s arrival by welcoming him into their home. Dustin Milligan, a dumb jock?

LOS ANGELES: Dustin Milligan plays the jock in the all-new 90210, but in person, he’s anything but dumb.

Confident, articulate, and charming, Milligan’s voice over the phone from Los Angeles sounded like he was more likely to be hanging out with the debate team or the current affairs society than spinning a crotch guard on one finger in the locker room after football practice.

The teen drama, also starring fresh faces Shenae Grimes, AnnaLynne McCord, and Jessica Stroup, is the rejuiced take on the phenomenally popular ’90s series Beverly Hills 90210.

The new 90210 re-uses the old plot, with the Wilson family moving to big, bad Beverly Hills from small-town Kansas.

Jennie Garth is back at school with her character Kelly Taylor now working as the school’s guidance counsellor.

Wild child Shannen Doherty also brings Brenda Walsh back as the school’s musical director in a multi-episode guest stint.

As lacrosse star Ethan Ward, Milligan is the chief man candy in the show, a status he feigns ignorance of. “A lot of people are comparing it to the original and saying, ‘Are you ready to be the hunk of the show?’,” said the 23-year-old, with a laugh.

Well, are you, punk? Are you? TODAY grilled him on his role — and he fielded every shot like a pro.

Why do we need a 90210 remake?

Can we ever have enough 90210? I think what’s really cool is that the producers have taken a campy — even cheesy — classic and updated it, and put their own twist on things.

Also, the original fans missed seeing the characters — that’s why it’s cool to have Jennie and Shannon back on. For new fans who heard about but didn’t really know about it, it’s an opportunity to share in and identify with it as their own — a similar but more contemporary and more relevant version.

How shallow and self-absorbed are the rich-kid characters?

What I really like is that on the surface, you have characters who are self-absorbed and piggish. But what we learn because of the introduction of the Wilson family into our habitat is that all of these characters are much more than the stereotypes you’d expect.

The Queen Bee can be very kind, the angry rebel teen is dealing with a lot of stuff at home, the jock is not just a jock… he’s not just solely interested in sports and hooking up with chicks and chugging beer. There are a lot of layers.

Are you a jock in real life?

I am not! I work out now more than I ever have. I was kind of a floater (when it came to high school cliques). I was kind of into drama a bit, I was also a skater, and I played floor hockey at lunch. You could say I carved out my own little niche!

What makes this show more than just another teen drama?

What I like about 90210 is that it’s not only about sex, scandal and ‘I can’t believe she just said that’. There are actual issues and lessons to be learned. We deal with them, we hope, in a very realistic way that’s relevant to today’s youth. We’re handling topics like sex and drugs, but we don’t exploit them. Ours is a character-driven drama, not a scandal-driven one.

The CW has ordered two additional episodes of 90210, extending the show’s seasons to 24 episodes.

Yay! Two more hours of Dustin!

While Dixon doesn’t seem bothered by the information, Annie releases her frustration and anger at a sleepover with Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord), Silver (Jessica Stroup) and Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes). The sleepover quickly turns into a house party with guys and drinking games. Meanwhile, Annie and Ethan (Dustin Milligan) decide to hide their relationship from their friends and Dixon opens up to Silver (Jessica Stroup) about his latest family issues. Adrianna and Navid (Michael Steger) continue to get close until she misunderstands his intentions. Now that Ryan (Ryan Eggold) is in on Kimberly’s (guest star Jessica Lucas) secret, the two can no longer control their desire for each other but are oblivious when a student observes their actions. October 23, 2008 - The “I can’t think of a clever pun for this blog” Blog, or: I’m sorry.

You know, it’s been a long time, again, since I’ve written a blog here. It’s been a long time since I’ve given you, the reader, a voice in a blog here. Something like this:

“Why has it been so long? Have you grown tired of our periodic interest? Is there another fans?” You ask, attempting to ignore obvious grammatical errors.

No there is not another fans, well except for the gang down at the Knights of Columbus Shadow-Puppeteering Community College Entrance class I started Tuesday. They’ve grown fond of my moves, but other than them? Nay, loyal reader, there is no one else for me to write to, and for good reason, for among all my ups and downs, my good times and bad, my zigs and zags, to’s and fro’s, my “toh-may-toe/to-mah-toes, po-tay-toe/po-tah-toes” if you will, none has stood so loyally, nor so proudly by me as you have. You’re consistent and encouraging comments, letters and occasional delicious baked goods have continued to amaze and remind me of how sweet I have it every single day. It’s really nice. Thank you.

“Booooring!” You bellow, “Say something good already!”

Alright, here goes:

It’s 5:34 am on a Saturday, I just wrapped from work (90210) about an hour ago. We were up in B-Hills shooting some scenes at the Mills’ house, which is less a “house” as it is a “mazingly mansion-like”, which is pretty neat because I don’t get to hang out in mansions otherwise so, you know, gotta take advantage. In general, the show’s going great, I genuinely love going to work everyday and love the free food. Oh the food is so awesome! Best part of the job, besides all the free candy. Currently I’m eating mozza sticks from Jack in The Box, delicious, whilst waiting for my eyelids to finally creep closed so I can fall away into Dreamland….. Nope still awake. uhhhh oh yeah! Extract!

So I’m in the new Mike Judge super-comedy, no biggie, and it’s freakin’ awesome! I got to work with Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, and Kristen Wiig and I had the time of my life! Mike is such a creatively welcoming and smart guy, it was truly an honor to work for him. You guys are gonna go ape-poop for this movie I promise, there is so much funny in every line, as well as some heartfelt moments, I can’t say enough about it! But I will. Enough.

So before I pass out while sitting up, I need to apologize for something.

A couple years ago, my roommates and I made a video, sort of like a Pilot “Webisode” for a show about us (hilarious!) that never got made beyond two episodes which are now floating around on the internet somewhere. Anyway, in said pilot, I use a derogatory word when speaking about an Elvis song; I say he’s the King of Homos. To all my readers, gay, straight, bi, still deciding: I’m truly sorry and deeply embarrassed by this. My personal views on homosexuality and bisexuality and sexuality in general are so far from the dark place where these kinds of hateful terms come from and are not at all reflected accurately by such a statement. Especially now, when same-sex marriage is such a big issue in the US, I feel the days when jokingly calling someone a “homo” or saying “that’s gay” are simply over. No one should be made to feel like they or their sexuality/lifestyle is synonymous with “stupid”, and no one should be made to feel like they are less than anyone else because of who they love. It’s almost like how, in the past, everyone used to drop the N-bomb like it was a day of the week, but now it’s totally unacceptable. I feel, hope, that down the line, it will be the same with sexually derogatory terms as well. I hope my kids never use these hurtful words as flippantly as I have. Again, I am ashamed for having said it and to everyone out there, fans, friends, family, and the LGBT community: I’m sorry. I suppose Elvis fans might be upset too: I’m sorry.

Although details on the film have been hard to come by, Kunis did cough up some key information on her character: “I play a pathological liar who’s a kleptomaniac, but also, just a lost little soul,” said the “That ’70s Show” star.

“She ends up seducing a coworker, played by Clifton Collins Jr. [‘Capote’], who loses a testicle in an accident, to sue the company to get a million dollars from it,” continued Kunis. “Jason Bateman falls in lust with her, wants to have sex with her, but he’s married [to Wiig] so he tries to justify it by hiring a gigolo [who is] Ben Affleck, playing his best friend.”

[...] “[When Bateman] hires a gigolo to seduce his wife, it works,” explained Kunis [...]. “Then he freaks out, because his wife is [also going to] have sex with this 19-year-old, dumb kid [played by Dustin Milligan], who’s really funny in the movie,” said Kunis. “Then, ultimately, Jason and I finally get together. We schtup, we have fun, and then you realize that I stole everything. And then, hilarity ensues.”

We’ll undoubtedly be keeping an eye on “Extract” as it prepares itself to hit theaters in 2009. But, with Judge’s bad-luck track record, we can’t help but wonder: Will the film even come to theaters?

Naughty but nice

Dustin Milligan, newly anointed heart-throb of 90210 talks to SCOTT KARA about the reinvented show

Dustin Milligan makes quite an entrance in the first episode of 90210, a modern spin-off of the popular 90s show Beverly Hills 90210.

He is lacrosse-playing jock Ethan. We first see him sitting in his truck outside West Beverly Hills High School - when up pops one of his female schoolmates from below the dashboard.

Making Ethan’s situation worse is the fact that he gets busted by sweet Annie (Shenae Grimes) with whom he had a summer fling a few years earlier.

Plus, at the time he is actually going out with Naomi (Anna Lynne McCord), the school’s most popular girl, and not the floozy in the front seat. Like, ohmigod.

It’s saucy stuff for primetime (Wednesdays, 7.30pm, TV3). And you’d never have seen that sort of smut on the original TV series with its blatant moral crusading.

But, says 23-year-old Milligan, who admits his experience of Beverly Hills 90210 is based on watching reruns, kids these days aren’t into being preached at.

“For its time the original was risque and it did handle some racy topics, although looking back it may come off a little corny.

“But certainly you would never see a blow job in the first 10 minutes of the original, or any show back then.

“When I first read the script, as racy as I thought it would be and as much resistance I knew it would meet from certain parent groups, I just crossed my fingers and hoped there wouldn’t be a rewrite. I was pleased when it made the final cut,” he laughs.

Milligan says executive producers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah - writers and producers for late-90s cult comedy Freaks and Geeks - had the challenge of portraying a young person’s world but also reflecting a parental point of view.

“And I think they’ve done it. There are elements of these wholesome family values but you look at teenagers and I can’t believe how quickly young people are moving these days as far as experimenting with drugs, and that sort of thing. So a young kid can get a blow job but a few episodes down the line they deal with sex in more detail and the attitude is, `This is stuff you need to consider and be careful about.’ I think there’s humour, there’s family values, as well as boundary-pushing moments.”

The new 90210, which is produced by the same company that makes teenage soap Gossip Girl, centres on brother and sister Annie and Dixon (Tristan Wilds), who have moved to California from Kansas. They are the new kids at West Beverly and fitting in is made worse by the fact their dad Harry (played by Rob Estes who was restaurateur Kyle McBride in Melrose Place) is the new principal.

At school they meet the likes of rebellious bitch Silver (Jessica Stroup), and aspiring journalist Navid (Michael Steger). Sound familiar? Some of the original characters are back, including Jennie Garth as Kelly Taylor, who is now the guidance counsellor; Shannen Doherty as Brenda Walsh, who went on to become a successful theatre actor and stage director; and Nat (Joe E. Tata), who is still running local hangout, The Peach Pit.

Life at West Beverly is a far cry from Milligan’s time at school in the small Canadian town of Yellowknife when he was a bit of a “doofus … not that I was always doing homework in the corner or anything, but I certainly wasn’t super popular. I was more into coming up with creative solutions for my boredom than just hanging out with people.”

Milligan doesn’t have much in common with Ethan, but is quick to defend his character and says he’s not such a bad jock despite being labelled by classmates as “the guy with the light bulb shining out of his arse”.

“He’s in pretty good shape, but he’s not super buff. Or super rich. And he’s really funny, and a bit of a goofy dork. So he’s kind of this quirky combination kid. And there’s not a lot of ego with Ethan.”

Although Ethan’s in-car antics are a little naughty, they are nothing compared to the controversy the weight and physiques of actresses Grimes and Stroup have raised in the American media. Their tiny frames and twig-like arms are distracting when watching the show.

But, like a true professional, Milligan’s retort is diplomatic, if a little evasive: “When there’s so much focus on a show like this the media and everyone is going to want to know every dirty little secret about every one of us. But it’s just that, and no disrespect to you of course, almost all that stuff is made up.

“Out here there are a lot of people who make money out of scandal so they have to create that stuff. It’s really unfortunate because [those in question] are people we know and care about and they are just being lied about.

“We are all friends, we hang out outside work, and support each other - and remind each other that that’s all bullshit.”

So he answers with diplomacy. Then again, it seems he had to, because TimeOut discovered he is now going out - in real life - with Stroup. That’s if the American tabloid media is to be believed. This small-town Canadian boy just made the leap to Beverly Hills.
